Is it better to have a Timber Fence or Aluminium Fence?
It depends. Timber fences often suit older properties while aluminium fencing will suit certain modern designs better. Timber fencing is often cheaper in the short term, while certain powder-coated aluminium fences can last 10-20 years with minor maintenance.
Which style of fencing is best for a pool?
Frameless glass fencing systems or modular aluminium fencing systems are both quite common choices for pools. Be aware that New Zealand pool fencing and gates have to comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act and the Building Act 2004. These laws are to keep kids safe. They centre around the fence being non-climbable (min. 1.2m high, no climbing aids within 1.2m) and being a sufficient boundary (no gaps exceeding 100mm in or under it). It’s worth getting expert advice on a pool fence to prevent rework after failing an inspection.
How high can my fence be?
Christchurch Council has various fence height restrictions based on use case and zoning. Most Christchurch residential boundary fences between neighbours can be 1.8m high, while some road boundary fences must be 50% visually transparent if over 1m in height.
There are various different use cases and exceptions to these rules, and consents can be applied for to build higher than general limitations where necessary.
Do I need a consent for my fence?
While ALL fences must comply with the building code, we build many fences that don’t require a consent. Consents are required in cases such as:
Fence height exceeds the permitted height for the zone and use case.
Fence is closer than zone rules permit to a stream, river, or open drainage channel.
